Rocks on the Beach

In 1988, I had a summer job working at what was then the Maine Photographic Workshops. I took the evening shift in the darkrooms so I had my days free. I would go the local Kmart, purchase expired Polaroid SX-70 and head to the beach. Beaches in Maine are rocky. I would walk the beach, shoot Polaroids and put them in my pocket intending to work with them later. No matter what I tried, I was never able to reproduce them with quality or make them feel like the originals. They ended up in a box on a shelf where I forgot about them. Recently while looking for film from my senior thesis project, I found them. Today, I can reproduce them with a quality that rivals the originals.

What is interesting to me is that these images from years ago, still resonate with the images I make today. I had no idea that I was making the same type of images so long ago.
